Waterloo grower builds Cedar Valley food hub for homegrown produce
Chad Thomas of A Family Market Place in Waterloo forms a network of 25 to 30 regional growers to supply retailers and restaurants with homegrown produce from 40 acres on farms 40 to 70 miles out. The venture serves Hy-Vee Fareway UN Town and Cornell College, aims for steady in season supply, and includes free range eggs chickens and Berkshire hogs. A refrigerated trailer and expanded transport help move 7 000 pounds per trip with a 12 foot trailer now a 20 foot flatbed and two to three turnovers weekly.
