The Tournament of Drums resumes in Cedar Rapids on July 29 presenting a day of percussion showcases and competitive performances by local and regional ensembles. Organizers invite community entrants and supporters to attend the lively event at the city venue.
Chris Magonigal founder and director of the Genesis Drum and Bugle Corps of Austin describes his 150 member group as a marching band on steroids. Musicians train 14 hours daily in 110 degree heat with strict diets and intense choreography during a 70 day season, bringing a high level of physical rigor to Cedar Rapids as they rehearse this week.

Cedar Rapids City Council approved Hobart Historic Restoration’s 7.3 million plan to convert the Knutson Building into a historic apartment complex with adjacent new construction along the Cedar River. The vote, 6 to 2, dismissed a Montessori magnet school proposal from Aspect Inc. and Cedar Rapids schools.
The University of Iowa reports international student enrollment has risen for years but may be leveling off this fall. Through mid fall 506 new international undergraduates have accepted, down from 650 at the same point last year, amid rising US education costs and tougher global competition. Downing Thomas notes more applications were admitted but fewer accepted.
