Army letters show humor amid gaffes and grub at Camp Polk

In letters from ROM PRIVATE R. D. Vernon of Company F Thirty-sixth Infantry Third division Camp Polk La to his Mammy and Pappy he jokes about barracks life. He lists a light pack weighing 65 pounds and a heavy pack up to 285 pounds. A truck ferries those who falter to the infirmary or guardhouse. He notes Thanksgiving thoughts and a big turkey farm, while other local vignettes recall fire calls and youth at matinees.

A barn dance at C. W. Lill’s place two miles east of Iowa City drew about 30 guests under a full moon. The floor, built from salvaged school boards, split under pressure as youngsters learned square dance figures taught by Larry Hard.
