Funding shortfall closes some Iowa river gauges
Dozens of USGS stream gauges in Iowa were shut down July 1 due to a funding gap. Hydrologists warn the cuts impair flood forecasts and early warnings, noting gauges cost about 15000 dollars annually to operate and that several sites along Buffalo Creek and Wapsipinicon River system are affected. Local officials urge partners to reestablish gauges for flood protection and recreation.
