UI to Eliminate 48 Jobs at Iowa University

The University of Iowa will cut 48 full time positions over the next months as part of ongoing cost reductions. Total layoffs since July 1, 2001 reach 315 FTEs amid $56.3 million in state cuts. UI President Mary Sue Coleman cites $10 million in new tuition revenue to minimize layoffs and notes few workers will find other University jobs. AFSCME Local 12 calls for layoffs by seniority for its 4,800 clerical and technical staff.

Nussle hits record fundraising pace in campaign drive

Rep. Jim Nussle reports a six week fund raising haul around a June 4 primary, saying he has raised 284 928 bringing total to 876 842 with 582 734 in the bank. Campaign says he is a normal Iowan while rival Ann Hutchinson backers claim the opponent is attempting to buy the seat.
