Jaycees Deadline Set For City Council Term Extension

Cedar Rapids Jaycees set a July 19 deadline to collect about 1700 signatures for a proposed ballot measure. A 60 day window after filing would trigger a special election to extend council terms from two to four years for those elected in November.

Plane crash near Denver claims sixteen lives

Emergency crews fought flames after a commercial flight barreled into fields near Denver. Sixteen passengers died, seven were in serious condition, and seventeen bodies were later transported to a gymnasium turned temporary morgue as survivors were treated.

Forest Fire Forces Hundreds to Flee in California

A fast moving forest fire near Yosemite National Park has killed at least two people, burned two towns, and driven hundreds from their homes. The blaze burned about 25 000 acres, destroyed Nipinnawassee and Ahwahnee, trapped a couple named George and Mrs Kipp, and threatened Bass Lake and Coarsegold as winds eased and heat remained extreme. Refugees crowded into Bass Lake as firefighting efforts continued along a five mile front.

Two Women Survive United Airlines Crash in Denver Trip

Ethel Pirie and Eva Herschel, injured but alive, described a rough emergency exit at the crash site near Denver. Herschel, with a burned arm, said she and Pirie jumped after a captain warned of trouble and that Pirie was among the first to exit. Thiessen Survives Crash Says He Is Extremely Happy

Willard Thiessen, fifth Cedar Rapids passenger, contacted from a Denver motel and described surviving the ill fated plane crash. He suffered only skinned knees and recounted the aircraft’s landing problems, the fire, and his escape with a young boy to safety. He planned to continue to Albuquerque after the sales trip and noted all his luggage burned.
