Hot and humid across the nation with scattered showers and thunderstorms in the east. Five day forecast shows temperatures 3 to 5 degrees below normal with rainfall averaging up to 0.8 inch and local heavy storms. Numerous legal notices, weddings and obituaries appear for towns including Marion Cedar Rapids Dubuque and Oelwein with service times and burial locations.
Cedar Rapids Jaycees set a July 19 deadline to collect about 1700 signatures for a proposed ballot measure. A 60 day window after filing would trigger a special election to extend council terms from two to four years for those elected in November.

Survived by husband Milo two sons John Richard and Robert Edward at home one daughter Jeanette Knoy Corpus Christi one sister Mrs Ruddy Sova Toledo Ia and her parents Mr and Mrs Louis Baker Houston Services at Fagle West Funeral Home Houston time to be announced.
Mae Leota Clausen will be laid to rest at Cedar Memorial after a chapel service at 1 30 p.m. Thursday conducted by the Rev. John Creese.
Esther Chambers, 60, widow of Whittaker Chambers, was admitted unconscious Monday to a Gettysburg hospital. Dr. Raymond Sheely, her attending physician, reported her condition as critical and declined to comment further. officials note she collapsed following her husband’s death.

Ethel Pirie and Eva Herschel, injured but alive, described a rough emergency exit at the crash site near Denver. Herschel, with a burned arm, said she and Pirie jumped after a captain warned of trouble and that Pirie was among the first to exit. Mrs. Ross reported the women’s safety to Pirie’s sister as both plan hospital stays and possible Denver visit delays.
Willard Thiessen, fifth Cedar Rapids passenger, contacted from a Denver motel and described surviving the ill fated plane crash. He suffered only skinned knees and recounted the aircraft’s landing problems, the fire, and his escape with a young boy to safety. He planned to continue to Albuquerque after the sales trip and noted all his luggage burned.
Brinker describes flames erupting as the plane stopped and a window melted. He raced to a front exit, found his briefcase, and escaped with others as fire surrounded the fuselage. A nearby woman was pulled away from flames by the captain. Brinker, unharmed, plans to fly again.
Waterloo seeks delay in a state health hearing on excessive algae and coliform bacteria in the Cedar River. Mayor Jochumsen cites lack of data while Cedar Rapids officials urge swift action. State health officials plan further tests as Cedar Rapids notes river use for public water.
A Cedar Rapids company spokesman said he had no information on whether Conrad would continue his trip or return home.
