Iowa Coach Blames Soviet Coaches for Fatal Diving Accident
Los Angeles Times reports U S diving coach Bob Rydze held back from the platform during Sergei Chalibashvili’s final dive citing safety concerns. Chalibashvili suffered a coma and multiple skull fractures after hitting the 10 meter platform at the World University Games in Edmonton. Rydze urged Soviet officials to restrict dangerous dives, saying the coach bears responsibility for divers attempting risky dismounts.
