Human Error Blamed in Alaska Pipeline Blast
A mistaken pump restart order in the Alyeska Pipeline may have triggered the explosion that killed one man and destroyed a pump station. Spokesman Larry Carpenter says the error likely occurred when a pump was started during maintenance and could have been ordered anywhere along the line from Valdez to the pump station 300 miles north. Oil flow may resume by week’s end, with several weeks possible. Two transportation inspectors investigated, noting the valve gushed oil into a hot turbine, likely causing the blast.
