Branstad declares Iowa drought disaster. corn crop at risk

Gov. Terry Branstad signed a statewide disaster emergency declaration as drought threatens up to half of Iowa's corn yield. Branstad Declares Disaster Emergency to Aid Water Relief

The disaster emergency declaration enables access to federal low interest farm loans and allows Iowa National Guard personnel and equipment to aid water transport and hay relief. It waives oversized load permit fees, lets the DNR implement a water allocation plan, and directs health and DNR to ensure safe drinking water. It also empowers the state to seek Corps of Engineers assistance for well drilling water hauling and temporary pipelines.

Heat shelters open in Cedar Rapids as heat index hits 90

A coalition of Cedar Rapids area agencies issued an emergency heat alert offering shelter at Westdale Mall and the Central YMCA for high risk groups including elderly and young children. Relief runs until 6 p.m. with special transport back home. overnight shelters return to hospitals for medical needs. Call 398 5364 or 1 800 332 8182 for arrangements. The alert follows a 90 degree heat index, lowered from 105 to reflect actual risk.
