James Stewart, 79, fell to his death Thursday from a catwalk 12 feet above the ground at a lumber company in Indianola. The incident is reported by AP.

Washington AP William Green president of the AFL declares Thursday night that John L. Lewis led steel strikes have been lost. He condemns 18 months of policies by the Committee for Industrial Organization, saying they harmed organized labor and chances for peace between the AFL and the Lewis group.
AMES AP State AAA farm leaders drafted resolutions at a meeting with the state agriculture conservation commission and extension workers. They favored increasing soil building payments, removing unproductive land from crop cycles, and setting a 50 percent minimum goal for the soil conservation program with payments scaled to progress.
Reports from Peiping say Chinese and Japanese forces agreed to withdraw from the zone west of Peiping after all night talks. Chinese troops move south of the Peiping Hangkow railroad and Yungting river. Japanese forces move north of the railroad and left bank of the river. Diplomatic negotiators to handle the Sino Japanese incident.
In St Joseph county officials of the Indiana Workers Alliance ordered a general strike of 2700 WPA workers to protest wage cuts and dismissals. About 600 joined the walkout with 1600 expected idle by nightfall. John K Jennings had pledged a fair test before dismissals but later said layoffs would continue despite the strike.
Florian Brugge Mann, 32, committed death by own action by shooting himself about 6 p m Wednesday. He had been despondent for a year or more and since Friday had been ill. His wife was at the barn milking when she heard a shot. She found her husband dead upon investigation. It was believed no inquest would be held. Bruggemann is survived by his wife, two daughters Jean and Lila, and a son Howard.
The senate labor committee approved an amended wage and hour bill allowing an administrative board to set minimum wages up to 40 cents an hour and a 40 hour work week minimum. It struck the previous plan for a labor standards board to set higher “fair” wages, drawing industry opposition led by John L. Lewis. Agricultural workers and industries with existing collective bargaining standards would be exempt.
MARYVILLE MO AP The remarriage of Mr and Mrs Williams Watkins occurred at their home to correct a faulty Nebraska record from 1893 by a Missouri pension official. Watkins sought evidence of age and learned their Omaha license was invalid because issued in the wrong Nebraska county. A new license was issued naming Watkins age 70 and Ettie Standiford age 68, then Probate Judge Milton Hull performed a second ceremony Tuesday night.
C Keneeny of O Ave NW reports selling 14 crates of raspberries to Gazette readers and nearly 50 callers. Mrs Wilson Jones of 1911 L St SW says her currants sold after placing a Want Ad, totaling 150 quarts. Readers are urged to phone 2-1121 to place Want Ads for cherries vegetables and other produce.
CHICAGO AP Mrs Daisy Tegtmeyer known as the forgotten woman of the Cook county jail won a path to release upon posting a 7000 bond while appealing her case. The appellate court granted a writ of supersedeas pending bond filing and a new appeal on her four year confinement over 30000 of her father in law estate funds.
Chicago AP reports a nationwide heat wave with northern states hitting 96 to 104 degrees. North Loup Nebraska reached 108, the hottest spot, as forecasters expected heat to persist into Friday with thundershowers in North Dakota and Minnesota. Despite the heat, corn farmers saw waist to shoulder high crops, hopeful for a bumper yield after heavy rains delayed planting.
New York report states Frank Wallace, Mae West’s self described husband, seeks half of her earnings from stage and film. Wallace’s attorney Samuel J. Siegel says an accounting of Mae West’s income and properties will be demanded.
Havana reports from Pinar del Rio say Senora Maria Vaga Cruz gave birth to five babies four boys and a girl in Sorca interior Cuba. The quintuplets were alive hours after birth and appeared to have a chance of survival, marking a rare medical occurrence.
The body of Frank R. Ball, 50, of Dallas Texas, was found Thursday afternoon beside his coupe on a side road near Keokuk. He had been shot through the heart and a pistol lay nearby. Ball disappeared after his wife reported fearing he might harm himself while officers searched for him at his cousin’s home for lunch. Physicians said he died several hours before discovery.
Moscow warned Tokyo that Soviet forces would take drastic action against further incursions into Soviet territory after a border clash left Russian and Japanese lives lost. Litvinoff delivered the protest to Ambassador Shigemitsu, citing Manchukuo incursions and a tense frontier near Vladivostok.
