Omaha Farm Credit Bank Posts 6 Million Loss In May To Aid Distressed PCAs
The Omaha Federal Intermediate Credit Bank reports a 1985 five month net loss of 6 million after diverting 11 million operating funds to 12 or 13 distressed Production Credit Associations in a four state area. Analysts note deterioration in farmland values and expect aid packages from other banks. Net earnings for the Land Bank and Bank for Cooperatives also fell versus 1984 and 1983. The bank projects a return to viability with year end aid and rate adjustments.

Medium sized farmers stuck in the middle
North Dakota State University economists report that medium size farms pay higher tax shares and have a greater failure risk than small or large farms. For earnings between 40 000 and 99 000 the tax rate nears 33 percent, while 10 000 to 39 000 pay about 19 percent and above 250 000 pay around 23 percent. Over five years, more than 80 percent of farm closures were medium size.
