West Branch Plans Grand Centennial Celebration
West Branch prepares a multi day centennial event starting Thursday with a city concert by the West Liberty band at 6 30 p m in downtown and a speech by Rep Thomas E Martin at Pageant field. A 250 member pageant follows, then the Queen's ball. Activities continue Friday Agricultural Day with a 4‑H livestock show and judging, Saturday features a big parade, a covered wagon, bands and a Moose lodge drum corps performance, and Sunday religious services plus a final lecture by Prof H J Thornton of the University of Iowa. The celebration is run by the Centennial Days Corporation with leaders Donald Johnson L P Foster Jr and others from 30 organizations.

Former Ag Secretary White Dies in Maquoketa
Benj amin D. White, 84, assistant secretary of agriculture under Theodore Roosevelt and Taft, died in Maquoketa. He taught agriculture at the University of Minnesota before moving to Washington and later led the Ayer McKinney dairy firm in New York. He had lived in Clarissa, Minn., for 20 years and was survived by his daughter Mrs. John Kargo, two brothers, and a sister.

Calmar Infant Strangled by Highchair Accident
Leroy Lensing one year old son of Mr and Mrs Gordon Lensing of a farm north of Calmar accidentally strangled in his highchair before noon Saturday. He became entangled under the tray while his mother was outside washing a cream separator. He died at Decorah hospital. Funeral services set for Monday at 9 a.m. at St. Aloysius church officiated by Father Matthew Beemer.

Stricter Iowa Beer Permit Policy Outlined By State Board
Des Moines AP reporting that Iowa may revoke tavern and off sale beer licenses for owners with poor character or felony indictable misdemeanor records. Melvin Synhorst, state secretary and beer permit board chair, says violations by drink sold lead to mandatory license cancellation. The board will review convictions via court records, rely on tax division staff, and avoid a policing division unless needed.
