Escape from Alcatraz review captures taut suspense with Eastwood

Gazette staff writer Mike Deupree notes the Paramount release leverages Clint Eastwood’s screen presence in a tight prison escape tale based on a true incident. The film’s strong setup, solid cast, and effective visuals sustain tension, though it suffers from stale archetypes and an abrupt ending. The PG rating reflects rough language.

Iowa Sets Experimental Early Duck Season For Three Years

The Iowa Conservation Commission approved a three year experimental duck season starting this September if a federal OK is granted. Tentative dates for this year are September 22 to 26 with five early days to aid blue winged teal and ease hunting pressure on wood ducks and mallards. Regular season would begin around October 20 and run into late November. The panel also set dates for ruffed grouse, squirrel, rabbit and jackrabbit seasons and listed tentative dates for rail snipe woodcock fur bearers and other furbearer hunting with various bag limits and hours. Continuous coyote season noted while spotted skunk remains closed.
