Nitrates in Cedar Rapids Water Remain Within EPA Limits

Cedar Rapids water shows nitrate levels roughly 50 percent higher in 1979 than 1978 but still well below EPA limits. Lab supervisor Tom Noth notes measurements in finished water read 1.5 mg nitrogen per liter or 6.645 mg nitrates, versus an EPA nitrate limit of 45 mg per liter, with last year’s nitrogen average at 1.88 mg per liter. He cites continued upward trend but safe current status, attributed largely to farm fertilizer runoff and well water cautions.
