State law makes five to thirty day suspensions mandatory for any driver convicted twice in one year for speeding and revocation for a second reckless driving conviction. Judge Charles Benesh announced the policy and four suspensions were handed down for thirty days each to George Lumbus Lauren Sproston Marion Lester Bean and Martin Hanzlik. Bean and Sproston faced reckless driving charges while Lumbus and Hanzlik had prior records.
Ida May Curtis aged 2 was missing from a logging camp in the Kootenai forest after bears were seen nearby. She was found unharmed about 400 yards from the camp after a 21 hour search, soaked but in good condition. Sheriff Ray Frost led 250 men in the hunt and said she wandered off on her own.

Frank J. Zbanek aged 81 of 1267 First Avenue SE Cedar Rapids died at 10 p.m. Monday after a long illness. He was a retired carpenter and longtime member of Local No. 308 AFL and Local No. 137 Musicians, Prokop Velky No. 7 ZCBJ and the Knights of Pythias. Survived by nieces and nephews. his wife Emma and son Carl preceded him in death. Service at Brosh chapel 3:30 p.m. Wednesday conducted by Rev. James M. Webb. Burial in Czech National Cemetery. Friends may call after 6 p.m. Tuesday. Donations to charity invited.
Cedar Rapids council hears Midwest Development request to fund paving beyond minimum at Noelridge addition north of Old Marion road and Forty second street NE. Vice-president LeRoy Skogman asks city pay half of paving on Golf street NE and possibly other park-adjacent streets. Commissioner Jones warns paving costs could balloon park budgets. study and recommendations ordered.
The report notes patrolmen issued warning tickets unless safety justified charges and warns of limited use of emergency limits. Most fatalities happened in daylight, with one eight death accident near Oxford Sunday night. Other deaths occurred across the state.
Joseph Kendra, 53, of Raritan New Jersey, was killed when the car he rode in veered off highway 30 and hit a light pole in Ames. Passenger William Halem, also of Raritan, survived in good condition and was treated at an Ames hospital.
John O. Clark, lifelong resident on a farm near Ely, died in a Cedar Rapids hospital Sunday. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. John's Lutheran church in Ely led by Rev. H. J. Lee and Rev. Francis Pokorny. Ely IOOF lodge will conduct graveside rites at Roger's Grove cemetery near Ely. Friends may call at Brush chapel and donations may go to church or favorite charity.
Services for Edward A. Wenke of 115 Sixth Street SW will be held at St. Patrick's Church at 9 a.m. Wednesday led by Rt. Rev. Msgr. D. J. Lenihan. Burial follows at Mt. Calvary cemetery. Rosary will be recited by Msgr. Lenihan, the Daughters of Isabella, and Sacred Heart Court No. 727 of W.C.O.F. at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in Teahen chapel. Friends may call.
A collision 17 miles north of Maquoketa injured seven people and left one uninjured. Shirley Wathier 19 LaMotte suffered a possible skull fracture and was taken to University Hospitals Iowa City with others including Merlin Kilburg 20 Bellevue Betty Kaiser 20 LaMotte Ella Klost 22 Springbrook and Joan Homan 22 Springbrook. In the other car Paul Hoerner driver Zwingle and Mrs Maleta Kent Dubuque were treated at Maquoketa or Dubuque hospitals.
Clarence Denney 41, a farmer living a mile west of Kinross, vanished after 7 am Monday. Neighbors numbered over 20 searched the area as a State Highway Patrol plane circled for clues but found nothing. Denney was last seen at Ed Sho walter’s farm about a mile from his home and his car was later found in the farmyard.
Gov. Leo Hoegh spent the Fourth of July dealing with his dog Punch who tangled with a porcupine during a Colorado vacation. The governor described removing about 200 quills from the dog’s face. Punch had previously wandered away from the Des Moines mansion.

Thirty two students from thirteen countries arrive by bus in Cedar Rapids at 5 30 p m for a day long stay living with eighteen local families They will tour the Quaker Oats plant at 1 30 p m on Wednesday and attend Kiwanis club ladies night at 6 30 p m before resuming their nationwide tour Thursday morning
Three persons were critically injured in a near head-on collision on highway 61 about seven miles southwest of Muscatine. Hospitalized were Mark Ramsay 26 and his bride of Oak Forest Illinois, and William R. Schillig 25 of Davenport.

Sheriff Jim Smith's office reports two more thefts at Palisades state park over the past two weeks. About $220 vanished from car glove compartments and a handbag containing roughly $100 was lost from a second vehicle. Names and addresses linked to the incidents are listed along with a prior June 21 theft of $23 from Emery Kohl's car glove box.
Stanley P. Zrudsky, 43, of Marion, pleaded innocent to a drunken driving charge at arraignment in Judge Charles Penningroth's court. He was released on a $500 bond after being arrested Saturday by Marion police for driving erratically on Marion boulevard between Cedar Rapids and Marion.
Spahn and Rose Lumber Co of Marion won a judgment of 1027.75 against Everett Ford in a promissory note case filed after Ford signed the note on March 5 and failed to keep up monthly payments of 55.71.
Justice of the Peace ordered the arrest of Gene Schreiner of Lincoln Nebraska on a homicide charge after Patrolman Ralph Garthwaite of Harlan died in a collision near Logan. Schreiner is hospitalized in Council Bluffs with facial injuries and a broken wrist. an inquest and grand jury will determine homicide degree.
The funeral is planned Wednesday in Sheldon for 34 year old Iowa Highway Patrolman Ralph Garthwaite of Harlan who was killed in a two car crash near Woodbine. He served in World War II and fought in Italy. Garthwaite joined the patrol three years ago and is the first patrolman killed on duty since 1954. Highway patrolmen will wear black arm bands for 30 days. The American Legion and Company 1 of the Iowa National Guard will conduct military graveside rites.
