Fourth of July events across Cedar Rapids schedule
The day features Indian Creek Nature Center walk at 6 a.m. and an Arts and Crafts Fair on First Street and Third Avenue SE from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Fifth Season 8K and 4K runs start 8 a.m. at Third Avenue and First Street SE, ending at Greene Square Park, followed by a pancake breakfast 8:30 to 10:30. Numerous kids activities run at Greene Square Park including the KCRG Kids’ Fair 8 a.m. to noon, parade at 10 a.m., penny carnival 10 a.m. to noon, and a kids’ fun run 9:30 a.m. Free swimming 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at public pools. At May’s Island and Ellis Park attend a Water-ski show 5 p.m. and a Celebration of Freedom fireworks 5 to 10 p.m. Evening concerts and events include Dixieland and ’50s-’70s music at May’s Island and Nite Moves on First Street East 5:30 to 9 p.m. Square dancing 6 to 8 p.m. Southern Knights perform 6 to 8 p.m. Classic cars visible. Cedar Rapids Municipal Band 8 to 9 p.m. A veterans memorial service with a flag-raising and 21-gun salute at the band shell 9 to 9:15 p.m. Fireworks end at 9:30 p.m. Details on street closings appear on page 3B.

Tardy Iowa tax refunds on way with interest
Iowa DRF says about 24 000 refunds from the 1990 personal income tax year should mail by late next week. Delays stem from a surge in returns and 70 000 returns still unresolved including 24 450 with possible refunds and 6 500 owing taxes in the error file. About 18 000 returns have taxes owed but not yet paid. Estimated refunds total roughly six million dollars plus around 120 thousand dollars in 1 percent interest penalties for June and July.
