Late Season Insects Plague Western Canada
In the fertile grainlands of western Canada a late season and a predicted insect invasion threaten crops. An unusually late spring followed a cold break-up delayed planting until mid May in Saskatchewan and Alberta. Dry conditions persist in Alberta and Saskatchewan, moisture is limited, while Manitoba remains sufficiently moist. Wireworm damage is severe in open prairies of Saskatchewan and grasshoppers continue to cause damage with expected population growth.
