The Cedar Rapids school board approved a $100 annual cost of living bonus for about 570 district workers for 1950-51, including 425 teachers 81 janitors 20 clerks and 50 others. The move, debated for hours, aims to raise starting pay toward other cities with further reviews possible next year.
Officials note potential salary increases for teachers if the school board approves another boost. The 1951-52 budget plans raise teachers' salaries to 1,510,000 and add funding for more teachers, fuel, and utility costs while cutting insurance charges from 22,200 to 6,200 for a one year adjustment. Revenue is forecast at about 462,500 aided by state funds and pension contributions, with major outlays in instructional services and plant maintenance.
The plan must receive final approval on August 7 to become official. If taxpayers object, any item can be reduced. No budget item can be raised at the public hearing. Any further boost would need an amendment after a new hearing on the school board’s proposed move.
A Saturday storm knocked out long distance lines in Toddville Robins Troy Mills Walker and Center Point with Cedar Rapids reporting about 80 outages from fallen branches. Rainfall reached 1.41 inches in Cedar Rapids while trees toppled in Independence Walker and near Center Point. A Cedar Rapids family escaped harm as a large tree collapsed on their car in Walker. Roads flooded along Highway 218 and 6, with water on Highway 150 near Center Point and widespread street flooding reported.
City briefs report Joseph J. Kozora, 38, of Windsor hotel, arrested by Detectives John Hanna and Tom Condon on a Waterloo desertion warrant and returned to Waterloo. Also notes Otto Thorson, 28, of Ninth Street NW, injured when his car rear ended another at Center Point Road. he was treated at St Luke's hospital and released.
Stella A. Vondracek died Saturday at her home Fairfax route 1. Funeral services will be conducted at the Janeba funeral home at 2 p.m. Monday by Theodore B. Hlubacek. Burial follows at Castek cemetery west of Swisher. Friends may call at the funeral home.
The obituary notes the deceased was an Episcopal Church member,Veterans of Foreign Wars Cedar Rapids and Ahaven lodge Asheville. The body will be transported to Turner chapel Sunday afternoon. Graveside services with Rector Albert G Colbourne at Grace Episcopal church will be held at Oak Hill Cemetery at 3 p.m. on Monday.
The infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Shields of 409 Thirtieth Street Drive SE Cedar Rapids died in a Cedar Rapids hospital at 11 47 p m Friday Surviving besides the parents are two sisters Janet Eileen and Rebecca Rae both at home the grandparents Mr and Mrs Raymond Stoll Cedar Rapids Mrs Gladys Shields Morris Illinois and Roy Shields Roscoe Illinois Private services were held in Turner chapel Saturday.
Donna Jean Dodge aged four, daughter of Mr and Mrs Don W Dodge of Bever Avenue SE, Oklahoma City born Sept 12 1945, died at home after a six month leukemia illness. Survived by brother Richard Allan Dodge and grandparents Mrs R C Roger of Des Moines and William J Dodge of Oelwein. Funeral at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Turner chapel with Oak Hill cemetery burial.
Mrs Margaret F Smith of 4036 First Avenue NE died at home Friday. Funeral services will be held Monday at 9 a.m. in St Patrick's Church conducted by Rt Rev Monsignor D J Lenihan. Burial in Mt Calvary. Rosary recited by Knights of Columbus at 4 p.m. and by Monsignor Lenihan at 8 p.m. Sunday in Teahen chapel. friends may call.
Miss Sada Dougherty a longtime Marion and Cedar Rapids teacher and later principal of Fillmore and Logan schools died at her Minneapolis home after a sudden illness. Born in Marion she taught in Polk and led Logan School in Minneapolis for 25 years. She helped found the Peoples Bank of Cedar Rapids and held Savings Account No. 2. Survived by a sister in Billings Mont she belonged to the Methodist church. Shade cemetery Marion will conduct a 3 30 p m service with Rev Floyd Hinshaw before the body is moved to Turner chapel.
Reported timing of new air and naval attacks by U S British and Australian forces signals plans to dig in and wait for a suspected Communist armored column led by tanks. If this strengthened column overruns the U S trained Southern army and is halted, the ground fighting stance could shift from retreat to attack.
Eugene Crawford Merrell, 614 First Avenue NE, a World War I veteran, died at the Veterans hospital in Des Moines at 7:25 am Saturday after a lingering illness. Born July 21, 1897, in Asheville, North Carolina, he moved to Cedar Rapids in September 1949. Survived by wife Nellie and siblings James of Knoxville and David of Cleveland, plus three sisters Myrtle Edgerton, Bertha Stroupe, and Ethel Pressley.
Iowa City resident Lyle Murray was jailed in Johnson County in a $2,500 bond on a charge of threatening to commit a public offense after his wife filed for divorce and signed an information. He previously was fined $17.50 in police court for beating his wife and may face contempt of court for violating a restraining injunction. District Judge Harold D. Evans will hear the contempt charge Wednesday.
Avery C. Larson of 709 Fifth Avenue SE was jailed Saturday night and will be charged with drunk driving. Patrolman Charles Fels arrested him about 11 p.m seven miles east of Cedar Rapids on highway 30 after his car left the road and ended in a ditch.
Children at Sinclair playground in southeast Cedar Rapids plan a 6:30 to 8:30 carnival next to St. Wenceslaus School to aid Camp Good Health. Activities include fortune teller, weight guesser, fish pond, games, crafts, spook house, lemonade, and a stage show with no admission, donations welcomed.
Atomic Energy Commissioner Sumner Pike said Senator Hickenlooper distorted his position on hydrogen bomb development. Pike noted his initial caution, saying facts changed his view, and defended ongoing progress while Gordon Dean serves as acting chairman after Pike’s term ended.

Services for William C. Lynch 78 of Marengo will be held Tuesday at 9 a.m. in St. Patrick's Church Marengo. Lenard Strong 72 a retired farmer died Saturday morning at Mercy Hospital Iowa City.
CHICAGO UP Millions of Americans jammed highways railroads and airlines Saturday in a mass exodus to vacation spots for the long July Fourth holiday. The National Safety Council predicted the worst traffic jam in history as 36 000 000 cars were expected on the roads and 385 deaths from 6 p m Friday to midnight Tuesday.
A steamboat passenger, nauseated by seasickness, fears death. The steward reassures him that no one dies from seasickness, prompting the man to admit that only that hope keeps him alive.
George L. Penrod, 38, of 12 Burch avenue NW, was charged with reckless driving liquor involved and operating a car without a driver's license. Arrested by Patrolman James Gildroy and Officer Harold Burgert about 5 15 p.m. near the Sixteenth avenue bridge. Gildroy said the car was driven erratically and struck curbing several times. Penrod admitted drinking before the incident.
Boone Iowa AP Coroner Garland Hancock released findings on Saturday that a man found dead in the railroad yards was not struck by the North Western eastbound streamliner City of Los Angeles as initially reported. The body was along the tracks early Saturday, likely hit by an earlier freight. Identified as Wilbur T Emerson Jr 42 of Winthrop Maine an inquest will be held.
