Washington lawmakers resumed work on the tax revision bill after a 13 hour session halted by the death of Senator Butler Nebraska a senior Republican. The chamber learned of his passing just before midnight ending a long debate on the measure.
In Washington the senate defeated a major amendment for farmer equipment purchase relief by a 65 to 15 margin. The tax bill retains the 52 percent corporate rate, expands research and depletion allowances, and extends accelerated depreciation. An administration proposal to ease stock dividend taxes was pared back. Iowa Senators Hickenlooper and Gillette split on amendments including a planned $20 tax cut and a $100 extra exemption for dependents.
Democratic Leader Johnson of Texas urged rejection of Communist China’s UN membership and joined Senate Republican Leader Knowland in demanding a foreign policy rethink and defense reassessment.
Secretary Dulles warned of a possible fall effort to seat Red China in the United Nations while President Johnson said Americans are uneasy about long time allies. Five armed robbers wearing stockings burst into the Ashland State Bank on Chicago's South Side just after opening. They brandished a machine gun shotgun and pistols, menaced staff, vaulted into tellers cages, and escaped with $46,678 in daylight.
