Senate votes dampen tax relief for stock dividends

In Washington the senate defeated a major amendment for farmer equipment purchase relief by a 65 to 15 margin. The tax bill retains the 52 percent corporate rate, expands research and depletion allowances, and extends accelerated depreciation. An administration proposal to ease stock dividend taxes was pared back. Iowa Senators Hickenlooper and Gillette split on amendments including a planned $20 tax cut and a $100 extra exemption for dependents.

Cedar Rapids school budget for 1955 56 shows record rise

The Cedar Rapids Board of Education approved a 5 158 538 budget for 1955 56 with a proposed tax increase of about 14 mills. The plan includes 265 000 from a five year 24 mill construction levy and projects three new elementary schools Wright Hoover Erskine plus two new primaries Arthur Harison and five additions to existing schools. Local tax sources would total 4 687 488 next year, with non tax sources 736 050 and a total 5 423 538 including construction funds.

A flaming F94C Starfire from Griffiss air base crashed near WalesvilleUtica on Friday killing four people and injuring three. The pilot and radar observer survived with injuries as the jet struck two houses and a car.
