Think tank urges higher Iowa earned income tax credit
Iowa City researchers say boosting the earned income tax credit to 15 percent of the federal level would raise about 700 dollars per qualifying family and lift around 4 000 Iowa children from poverty. The proposal, backed by Sen Joe Belkcom, argues the credit reduces welfare use and supports working families.

Black bear completes Iowa trek settles near Baraboo Wisconsin
A young male black bear that traveled about 259 miles across Iowa Illinois and Wisconsin has safely reached woodlands near Baraboo Wisconsin. DNR biologist Terry Haindfield notes the bear faced vehicle risks and wary residents but remained largely docile as he moved toward potential mates and a denser population of bears. He crossed the Mississippi by swimming into Iowa and left toward Illinois. The GPS collar tracked the route and aided study of bear movements through the region.
