Rambling platen centerpiece in Iowa exhibit
A 120 pound historic platen on loan from the Siouxland Heritage Museum dominates an Iowa Masonic Library exhibit. The relic, once part of the Dubuque Visitor printing press, traveled through Iowa Wisconsin Minnesota and South Dakota before ending in Sioux Falls. It survived river floods and Indian attacks, later found by Pettigrew and bought for five dollars for his private museum. The display also features Babylonian tablets, hieroglyphs, medieval manuscripts, letters from Twain and Whitman, and a tiny 1 1/2 by 1 1/2 inch Bible extraction read with a magnifier.
