Snow shoes help Marion district kids glide through winter
Marion Independent elementary students use ash framed snow shoes with woven nylon netting, crafted by Reta Lemon, to explore outdoor science. Lemon, district science coordinator, began making them for herself, then supplied 28 kits last year. With wide snow, students from all grades walk, learn, and exercise during lunch and science classes.

Court upholds Spence confession in Cedar Rapids robbery case
The Iowa Court of Appeals, in a 3-2 ruling, refused to overturn Ronald L. Spence’s first degree robbery conviction for the 1980 J. C. Penney’s heist at Westdale Mall Cedar Rapids. The court held Spence freely waived his rights and confessed after police interrogation despite requests to see an attorney.
