A 12 year old farm boy, Richard Grise, died Saturday afternoon on a farm three miles west of Millersburg while playing cowboy. The coroner ruled accidental death. funeral services are planned in Montezuma.
Des Moines Iowa Governor Hoegh says Henry Cabot Lodge Junior has acknowledged his proposal for U N visits with Chinese prisoners held in Red Chinese camps. The governor reports Lodge sent a telegram but did not reveal his stance on the plan. Hoegh suggests a U N mediated visit at Panmunjom Korea to discuss access.

Iowa City announces 246 degrees to be conferred at the University of Iowa winter commencement February 5 at 10 a.m. in the University Fieldhouse. President Virgil M. Hancher will confer degrees and deliver the charge to graduates, many of whom will receive advanced degrees.
A brief collection of academic degree abbreviations such as Ph D Doctor of Philosophy Law and Master of Arts. It includes B A B S N B S C and other structured postnominal titles with distinctions noted as With Distinction or With High Distinction.
Frederick Bargebuhr will serve as chaplain for the ceremony. The university band provides processional and recessional marches and a brief concert. Degrees awarded cover 52 Iowa counties 26 states Hawaii and five foreign countries including Canada Egypt India Okinawa and the Philippines. Eastern Iowans listed by county include multiple graduates from Allamakee Benton Cedar Fayette Johnson Linn and Winneshiek with degrees in law engineering nursing and education among others.
Gifford Iowa elementary school with 30 pupils burned Saturday night causing an estimated 35000 loss. The district may place students in nearby towns while board seeks temporary quarters and rejects offers from Eldora New Providence Whitten and Union. Fire crews from four towns aided.
The Alva Chase family home in Fayette was destroyed by a fire estimated at 7000 dollars. The family, including a young son, escaped unharmed but lost all furnishings and clothing. The fire started in an upstairs room of the two story house and the cause was not immediately known. Neighbors began a drive to collect clothing and furniture for the family.
In Muscatine a police raid at the home of John Collins found 16 people drinking and playing cards. Collins was fined 25 dollars for operating a disorderly house, while the 15 men and one woman received 5 dollar fines each.

A United Air Lines Convair belly landed in a cornfield near the Fred Lenocker farm in Dexter, Iowa, after takeoff from Des Moines. One passenger was injured. officials blamed a broken elevator bolt. The Lenocker family hosted workers, with 80 dollars in tips and possible appliances promised, while a 24 hour guard protected the wreck as it is dismantled or shipped to San Francisco for repair.
Alan Elthon 23 of Fertile son of Lt Gov Leo Elthon paid a 25 dollar fine after pleading guilty to a careless driving charge from a collision on U S 18. He and his mother in the car testified the wrecker and car were across the highway and he did not see them in time to stop. Justice C E Ashland suspended half the 50 dollar fine. Both vehicles were badly damaged and no injuries were reported.
State of Iowa Linn County District Court notices probate of will. An instrument dated February 4 at 9 oclock asserted as the last will and testament of a deceased resident is presented for probate. The court will determine its validity and appoint a representative.
Waterloo with Dr Isaac E Hayes famed Cyclone guard 1933 35 dies age 43. Friends group sets up a memorial fund to loan Iowa State College veterinary students through a low interest program. Trustee Charles Levett Cedar Falls reports $1,000 pledged toward a $30,000 goal. Fund to be administered by the college veterinary department.
