Iowa Senate approves extension of income tax filing deadline to April 30 due to federal changes. Other actions include local tax exemptions reimbursement talk, highway and municipal law tweaks, budget session plans, and debates over a new state constitution printing and hunting trespass rules.
Former Cedar Rapids stamp dealer Brookman, critically wounded in his Minneapolis home, was interviewed by police after his condition improved. Police seek whether the attack was robbery or a crazed act, noting his attacker likely not known to Brookman and that the crime remains under investigation.
Pravda in Moscow condemned the U.S. congressional resolution empowering President Eisenhower to use armed force in guarding Formosa as a rude premeditated provocation and accused Washington of a criminal aggressive policy aimed at aggravating tension in the Far East.
United Mine Workers chief John L. Lewis accused the Tennessee Valley Authority of using its coal purchases to beat down small producers to starvation wages. United Air Lines awarded a tax free bonus of 22500 to a flight crew for superb flying and saving 39 aboard a Convair on January 19 near Dexter Iowa after elevator control loss and a steep dive. Captain E W Andreasen and co pilot Thomas D Boyle shared 10000 each while stewardess Enid Patricia Johnson received 2500.
DES MOINES Iowa Governor Hoegh proposed a meeting of wives and parents with American prisoners in Red China. Secretary of State Dulles sent a telegram saying his suggestion is being considered and he will contact Hoegh within 48 hours. The Fischer family of Swea City spoke of dismay over the travel ban to Red China.
Senator Gore demands a new AEC vote on Dixon Yates power contract after Commissioner Murray urged cancellation. SEC confirms a fresh review of the deal. Gore cites a 10 to 8 House Senate atomic committee vote urging cancellation.
A truck carrying two families on a picnic fell 90 yards down a grade near Toowoomba Australia killing six people and injuring sixteen on Monday. Police and emergency crews responding to the scene reported multiple casualties and described a chaotic rescue effort as survivors were pulled from the wreckage. Investigators began assessing the cause as relatives gathered at the hospital and the scene remained cordoned off.
Belle Plaine voters approve a $260000 school bond 627 to 346 in a special election. Total ballots 994 with 21 spoiled. Funds finance two new schools replacing Longfellow and building near Central school for kindergarten through sixth grade and kindergarten through third grade respectively.
A new ordinance in Minakami Japan declares a 9 p.m. curfew on drinking. At curfew time a siren wafts through the town signaling wives may take wine cups from their husbands.
United Nations Security Council debated a Formosa cease fire and invited Peiping to join the discussion. US delegate Lodge said the invite does not imply recognition. Russia opposed the New Zealand plan and Nationalist China abstained as talks continued on the Formosa crisis and the Tachens.
Atty. General Dayton Countryman ruled that liquor cannot be kept on the premises of beer permit holders in private clubs or public restaurants. The opinion, supported by Polk County officials, would crack down on stored liquor by members and on spiking drinks in taverns that sell beer. Countryman noted no conflict with a 1952 ruling that allowed liquor at clubs not selling beer.
Jose Reyes, 40, World War II Medal of Honor recipient, was adopted by Leonard and Olive Greensfelder of Los Angeles after years of friendship. Reyes, born in Mexico and raised in a Texas orphanage, served with the 2nd Infantry Division under Gen. Patton, was blinded by shrapnel in 1944, and spent years in hospital before his discharge in 1947. The Greensfelders, longtime neighbors, now treat him as their son and provide him with a secure family life.
The Senate Foreign Relations Committee rejected an immediate action on a Formosa cease-fire endorsement. It will reconsider next Tuesday with possible language revisions. Senator Knowland argued against blanket appeasement while Senator Humphrey defended seeking a U.N. backed stance.
