Whittling Canes and Craft From a Cottonwood Past
Leonard Hayes recalls making toys from wood around 1900 before commercial toys. He whittled about 50 canes from locust and hickory, sometimes adding carvings, then gifted them to friends and relatives. His wife Fern helped with sewing while Leonard pursued numerous self taught hobbies. They live in Cedar Rapids and cherish handcraft over modern machines.
