Cedar Rapids man dies as fire starts from cigarette

A Cedar Rapids man, Jack Thorne, 75, died in a pre dawn blaze at 1218 Eighth Street NW. His sister Susie Case, 86, was hospitalized in serious condition and Gertrude Marquardt, 83, in fair condition. Neighbors recalled flames and calls for help as fire crews battled the blaze amid bitter wind. The Red Cross is assisting the family.

Twenty Missing In Hotel Blaze
