US Department of Agriculture estimates show Tuesday receipts of 12 000 hogs 8 000 cattle and 2 000 sheep in Chicago. Live hog prices advanced 25 to 50 cents while cattle gained 50 cents to 1 and sheep 50 cents to 2. Low receipts boosted price strength says traders.
Receipts: hogs 11 000, sheep 1 000, cattle 7 000. Hogs active with butchers 25 to 50 cents higher. top $22.25 for 180-220 lb and $21.00 to $22.25 for 230-320 lb. Sows up to 50 cents, lighter weights around $18 to $19. Bulls stronger. vealers $33 to $39. Steers and yearlings partly higher to $38.00 and up. cows $22 to $25.50. calves about $300. Market driven by light receipts and strong demand.
USDA cattle receipts reach 5 500 head with feeding values firm to higher. Fed steers and heifers mostly 25 to 50 cents higher, cows uneven yet steady to 50 cents up. Stocker and feeder classes light, some loads of choice fed steers around 1100 pounds, with prices from 31.50 to 34.50 and cows 18.50 to 21.50. Bulls and dealers mixed, canners 18.50 to 21.50, stocker calves up to 40.00.

Cattle receipts totaled 6 500 with 300 calves as slaughter steers rose up to 50 cents and some sales hit one dollar. Heifers gained up to 50 cents, 1 000 to 1 100 pound steers ranged 36.00 to 36.75, high choice 1 325 pounders at 35.25, other fed cattle 31.00 to 35.00, and stockers and yearlings traded from 34.00 to 39.00 with feeder cattle around 31.50 to 34.15 depending on weight and grade.
Des Moines reports Monday receipts at 45 000 and week 86 900 year 56 000 with Saturday actual 37 500. Hog loads from two southern Minnesota packing plants and 12 others plus 30 concentration yards and out of state sites. Prices rise 25 to 50 cents, with barrows and gilts at 18.00 to 20.75 for various weights and sows between 17.75 and 19.35 depending on weight and grade.

Des Moines reports Patrolman Clarence C. Wagner of Cedar Rapids has been called to active navy service. His loss reduces State Highway Patrol strength to 150 of 163 authorized. Wagner, 26, from Dubuque, served nearly three years and acted as a driver’s license examiner in Cedar Rapids.

Merchants National bank rose five places to 222nd among the nation’s 300 largest banks in the 1950 American Banker ranking. Cedar Rapids based bank moved from 227 to 222 as of December 30, 1950. The Bank of America led with deposits over 6.19 billion, while Iowa-Des Moines National Bank topped Iowa at 164th nationwide.
