Storm Lake man killed after daylong standoff with police
In Storm Lake a 45 year old Daniel Joseph James Palenik fled a traffic stop and spent about 19 hours barricaded in his home firing at officers. Dozens of agencies assisted as Palenik fired on law enforcement before being killed by returning fire around 3 a.m. Monday. Police say no officers were identified as the shooter and investigation continues by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.

Teens Hurt as SUV Hits Train at Robins Crossing
Two teenagers were injured when an SUV failed to yield at a Robins crossing near East Main and Front Street. Remington Franks 17 Cedar Rapids drove the beige Honda Pilot with Daniel la Pint 15 Center Point as it was struck by a northbound Canadian National train. Pint suffered significant injuries and Franks minor injuries. The incident remains under investigation by Linn County Sheriff’s Office and CN Railway Police.

Thomas Lee Hansen Sr. 84 of Riverside died Jan 22 while serving a 50 year sentence for second degree murder in the 2011 death of Sharon Gerot. A former Johnson County Emergency Management coordinator and Iowa City fire official, Hansen retired in 1996 and 2001 respectively.
