In Des Moines five men died in a $100 000 Olympia hotel fire with panic listed as a factor. Four victims were elderly and one was 45 year old John Beebe. The walkup building housed top floors of a brick three story structure. Firemen helped several residents to safety after the blaze began about 12 40 a.m. Coroner Johnson said most deaths were by suffocation with one burn injury. Fire Marshal Lodequist pegged the source to faulty wiring in a first floor cafe. Managers Moratis and Nichols, aged 69 and 53, attempted to awaken guests as smoke spread.

Gary Wayne Martin aged 19 from near Mason City died in a one vehicle crash about six miles southeast of Mason City. The car left a Cerro Gordo county road, struck a farm driveway, and overturned in a ditch after rolling 263 feet. Passenger Lyle Buehler, 18, of Mason City, was thrown clear and reported in good condition at a local hospital.
