A $50,000 federal grant will aid restoring the Suchy Building at 1006 Third St SE Cedar Rapids as part of the Main Street District program. The landmark 1907 site, once a jewelry store and later a tavern, may reopen as a South American fusion restaurant after restoration with Jumpstart funds matched by the Chadima family.

Unemployment Drops in Corridor MSAs End Year Higher Rates
December unemployment rose in the Cedar Rapids and Iowa City MSAs with rates at 6.5% and 4.5% respectively. Cedar Rapids total nonfarm payroll slipped to 138,000 down 1,000 from November and 1,400 from a year earlier. Iowa City employment fell 2,000 from November to 90,900, down 900 year over year.

Delta to pour $1 billion into service gains and fuel efficiency
Delta Air Lines will invest about $1 billion over 3.5 years to boost customer service, remodel aircraft, and improve fuel efficiency instead of new planes. The plan includes $300 million per year through mid-2013 for in-flight entertainment, lie-flat international seats, VIP lounges, and other service upgrades. Winglets will be added to 170 aircraft to extend range and cut fuel use by up to 5 percent.
