The period records dense fog on seven of nine days with visibility reduced to a quarter mile. January brings persistent cold, with nine of ten days posting subzero lows and several days at or below minus 14. December shows a high of 58 and early subzero lows as winter grips the region.
Gov Chet Culver says state government can achieve at least 300 million in savings by June 2011 through executive orders and legislation. He will not include a proposed 25 million in extra revenue from expanded gambling in the fiscal 2011 budget plan due Wednesday.
The Cedar Rapids school district will demolish the bus garage at 2933 Ellis Rd NW to clear the way for a new administrative service center and bus facility. Architect Michael Gumm cited traffic circulation as a key issue to be resolved. The project replaces the Education Service Center and four damaged support buildings from the 2008 flood, with an approved $142,000 portion of funding.
The district plans repurposing three Cedar Rapids Community School campuses for administrative offices and libraries, plus a 1A phase of land for the project. The plan requires removing the 14,000-square-foot bus barn, a move opposed by board member Keith Westercamp who favors preserving the building.
Little Melia O'Neil, 17 months, is recovering from a third skin graft after she turned on hot water in a Cedar Rapids home on January 3. Her mother Lisa Kotouc was briefly outside with a new puppy when the accident occurred, leaving the child severely burned across 39 percent of her body.
Fairfax Savings Bank opened an account to aid Melia O Neill who suffered severe burns. Investigators traced the incident to a rental home where a water heater was set to 135 degrees, about 15 degrees above guideline. Police comment on heartbreak as Kotouc, 24, questions what could have been.
