Katherine Haiges, 23, found her hostess and three others dead in a Philadelphia basement garage from carbon monoxide. A 65 year old man and two women died, Marie Doyle, 24, the hostess’s daughter, plus others aged 27 and 68 per homicide Sgt. McBride. An empty tank and running ignition suggested self-inflicted death with accidental consequences.
Cedar Rapids city council discussed acquiring a 50 by 200 foot parcel on C Street west side south of the liquor store to create 44 off street parking spaces. The asking price is $16 000 with potential lease option. Plans include two rows of stalls with a 22 foot center lane funded by the Sixteenth avenue meter fund totaling about $21 600.
Adlai Stevenson told the National School Boards Association convention in San Francisco that the public bears responsibility for U.S. education ills. He warned communities may favor driver education and leisure goods over Latin and math and questioned why colleges fund scholarships for coordinated bodies over coordinated minds. He noted families hesitate to borrow for education while buying consumer items on credit.
Mr and Mrs Omero Fuggiti reported their 3 year old son missing to a Chicago police station. Policeman Robert Star searched through snow and questioned neighbors before returning home with a hunch. The child was found asleep in the back of a console television set.
Special report from The Gazette details 12 year old Jerry Keeley accidentally shot in the thigh and stomach by a hunting companion during a rabbit hunt Sunday. He remained in fair condition Monday at Oelwein hospital.
Fred T Calkins 114 Twenty-fifth St SE died Sunday after a long illness. Born February 21 1888 in Iowa City he was a World War I veteran and 52 year resident. Survived by wife Della McKee married May 1 1929 in Cedar Rapids. He belonged to Iowa City Methodist Church Division 159 B L E past chief Unit 29 Retired Railway Employes Hanford American Legion post Elks life member. Services Tuesday at Turner's 3 pm with B L E and Legion military honors. burial Oak Hill. Friends may call at chapel.
Bertha Rice widow of William Rice formerly of Cedar Rapids died Saturday in Phoenix Arizona after a sudden illness. Born August 24 1902 in Benton county she leaves son James of Youngstown Ohio two daughters Mrs Lewis Martin Glendale Arizona and Mrs Joe Esli Scottsdale Arizona three sisters and two brothers. Services at Turner's with time announced later burial at Cedar Memorial. Friends may call after 1 p.m. Wednesday.
Cedar Rapids City Council sends proposed school year curfew ordinance back to the Public Safety Youth Commission for reconsideration. The measure would start 9 10 p m for under 13 and 11 p m for under 18, with summers one hour later and an extended maximum age to 18. City Attorney McGuire seeks a precise definition of school functions and a rework of weekend and school night exemptions. Also notes the death of Safety Commissioner Bob Irvin Kirkpatrick, a World War II veteran and longtime plasterer, with services planned.

Josephine B. Hlavaty 82 of Minneapolis, widow of Rev Vaclav Hlavaty, died Sunday. Born Ely October 6, 1876, she lived in Minneapolis 15 years and had ties to Hus Memorial Presbyterian Church where her husband preached. Survived by four daughters. Services at Hus Memorial Presbyterian Church 1:30 Wednesday led by Rev Joseph Havlik. burial at Oak Hill. Friends may call at Barta Hesser chapel Tuesday 2 to 9:30 a.m.
Caroline E. Roberts widow of Clarence Roberts of 1815 Third Ave SE died in a nursing home after a long illness. Born January 14 1888 in Staten Island New York she came from Manchester in 1942 and leaves a daughter Mrs Harvey Hines Cedar Rapids and one sister in California. Services by Dr Jackson Burns of St Pauls Methodist Church are at Turners at 1 30 Wednesday with burial at Manchester.
In Jerusalem Abba Eban was instructed to seek a Security Council meeting to address a series of Syrian acts of aggression. The move follows recent tensions and calls for international mediation.
A $2,395 damage suit was filed in district court by Fairfax residents Raymond and Bernadine Brecht against Clyde McGural David Ahrens and John E Banes. They allege excavation work damaged and blocked a community storm drain near the plaintiffs property causing the Sept 3 flood of their basement and seeking the stated amount. A jury trial is requested.
Larry Joe Elmore, 20, of Hiawatha, was charged Monday with driving while license was suspended. He was arrested Saturday night by Cedar Rapids police at J street and Fifteenth Avenue SW. Elmore was fined $2 and costs in municipal court on a separate charge of running a stop sign. Jessie B. McCosh named sole heir to Jessie M. Baird estate. will admitted to probate Monday. Dwight Krumholtz confirmed as executor.
The city council will hold a public hearing February 19 on assessments for 1958 New Road work. Objections must be filed with the city clerk before the hearing. Midland Construction Co. completed sections of Golfview Drive and several streets. other 1958 work will be assessed later. Dr. Philip S. Crew challenged a $3270.49 Fortieth Street NE charge and urged a longer payment period without 6 percent interest.

Washington AP Seaton urged Hawaii become a state now, saying Hawaii must be an equal partner and that statehood would prove American commitment to Asia. He noted Hawaii’s population around 635000, its anti Communist constitution clause, and economic political readiness. He warned Congress to set its own schedule but favored immediate passage.

Mrs. John B. Schmitz 85 of Cedar Rapids died Monday. Born February 9, 1873, she lived much of her life in Dy ersville. Survived by three sons Wilfred Raymond Dr Joseph and seven daughters. Services set for Thursday in St Francis Basilica.
Christian Lee of Iowa City faced a third offense drunken driving charge after a bond set at 1500 dollars. Arraignment was continued until Wednesday.
