Texas Governor George W. Bush captures the Republican caucus victory in Iowa with 41 percent, while publisher Steve Forbes secures a strong second place with 30 percent, defying some expectations and signaling a competitive nominating race.
Vice President Al Gore defeats Bill Bradley in Iowa with 63 percent to 35 percent as 98 percent of 2131 precincts report. Gore vows early turnout effort in New Hampshire and pledges to keep fighting. Bradley concedes with grace.
In Ely Putnam Township, 69 of 1 036 registered voters attended a caucus in former basement classrooms. Republicans showed higher turnout with 47 of 233 registered and 45 percent voting for Bush. Keyes and others trailed as Democrats supported their own slate.
In Cedar Rapids precinct 6, Democratic supporters for Al Gore and Bill Bradley met at Noelridge Christian Church for a presidential caucus. Gore led with 4 delegates to Bradley's 3 after a brief 1 hour 40 minute gathering as uncommitted voters realigned split evenly at the first division.
