President Eisenhower unveiled an eight point program to revise federal housing laws aiming for good housing in good neighborhoods. He called for 140000 new public housing units over four years and higher loan funds to redevelop decaying areas while boosting private financing and streamlined administration.
France and Britain pressed for a Western backed united Germany within a Western peace framework. London and Paris urged German unity under a Western defensive umbrella while Molotov pushed for a five nation meeting including China to reduce international tension. Senator McCarthy says the senate investigations subcommittee rescinded his absolute hiring and firing powers to entice Democrats back from a six month boycott. Three former Democratic members attended the closed session as observers. McCarthy argues for expanding investigations rather than consolidating them.
Senator Gillette of Louisiana urged the Federal Trade Commission to investigate U S coffee importers and distributors. He argued that much of the recent price rise stems from gambling and speculative practices rather than supply and demand, and warned the situation is intolerable for American consumers.
New York report from the National Coffee Association states housewives may pay up to $1.25 per pound for coffee by the end of February. The outlook for consumers is bleak, with little hope for relief before the 1955 Brazilian crop reaches roasters.
