Merger at Alburnett sparks school progress in Linn County

In eastern Iowa, Alburnett and Toddville combine after a 2 to 1 vote, boosting high school enrollment and band quality. Superintendent Bohr notes no Toddville high band last year and says consolidation cuts staff by four, saving about 14000. Transportation improves and vocational agriculture will be added next year.

Iowa Highway Funds Rise Amid Growing Vehicle Use

Iowa motorists paid a record 91.4 million into the road use tax fund in 1953, with gas taxes at 45.3 million and license fees at 34.8 million. The state plans 49 million for primary and farm to market roads, paving 186 miles and widening 47, while total vehicle registrations reached 1,235,165 with 983,044 cars.

New School To Open at Amana Soon

The Amana school district will open a new building on Middle Street Feb 1 with brief ceremonies for contractors and staff. Public dedication is planned for next fall. The facility provides kindergarten through sixth grade classrooms. Continued on Page 3.

Boone radio station marks 27th anniversary celebration

The AP reports that radio station KFGQ marks its 27th anniversary with three services. Dr. Charles Porter of Chicago will preach and Mrs Porter will sing during the event.

Pay Raises Denied for Iowa City Police Fire and Streets Staff

City officials rejected pay boosts for policemen firemen and streets workers citing lack of budget funds. Streets workers sought 25 cents an hour while firemen and police requested 30 dollars per month per person.

Manchester Natural Gas Franchise Sought

A request for a natural gas franchise was received by the Manchester city council from John Donovan of St. Paul representing the Perry Gas Company. City Manager Francis Hoag said it was the first such request here. Donovan cited extensive preliminary work and a project cost of $150,000 or more, urging investigation and a timely decision.

Treichler, Coggon Former Treasurer, Dies at 78

L. R. Treichler of Coggon died Friday night after a heart attack. A former town treasurer and retired Kellerton lumber dealer, he moved to Coggon in 1943 and served as treasurer.

Youth Faces Burglary Charge in Wisconsin

James B. Clark 18 of Platteville Wisconsin was returned by Sauk County sheriff on burglary and larceny charges in a case tied to a 1600 dollar central Wisconsin robbery. He and two teen companions were arrested last Sunday under curfew. Cletus L. Russell 17 was released to his step mother. Eugene K. Belken 19 was jailed 15 days for vagrancy.

Plummer Runs for Democratic Attorney General Nomination

Lawrence E. Plummer of Northwood former Worth county attorney 1940 52 announced his candidacy for the Democratic nomination for attorney general in the June primary. The 44 year old lawyer served in the navy as a lieutenant and has practised in Northwood since 1935. He is a Roberts County South Dakota native married to Helen Eiel of Buffalo Center with one child.

Iowa University scientists use two atom smashers

At the University of Iowa nuclear physicists operate the Van de Graaff and Cockcroft-Walton smashes along with 11 researchers to probe atomic nuclei. Dr. James A.
