Energy Secretary James Schlesinger told Congress the United States is not discriminating against Mexico but finds its gas price unacceptable. He noted Mexico seeks about four times the current interstate price, twice the U.S. average and above Canadian rates. He warned Canada could raise prices to about five dollars per thousand cubic feet if the U.S. buys Mexican gas. The national average is just under two dollars per unit. He did not spell out potential retaliation or other measures.
