Pentagon creates covert Strategic Support Branch for human intelligence
The Pentagon launches a new covert unit, the Strategic Support Branch, under Defense Secretary Rumsfeld to conduct clandestine human intelligence operations abroad. It operates under direct secretary control, without CIA oversight, using reprogrammed funds and aiming at emerging targets in Somalia, Yemen, Indonesia, the Philippines and Georgia.
