Norway banker seeks GOP nod for treasurer
Burtwin Day of Norway a 56 year old banker announced on Monday his bid for the Republican nomination for state treasurer. He seeks a more collaborative Executive Council with Gov. Branstad, arguing Republicans should help craft cohesive 1990s policy. Day opposes tax anticipation bonds for operational expenses and would lead the state toward firmer budgeting. Day leads Benton County Savings Bank and runs real estate and insurance firms, with prior GOP leadership roles and ISU veteran status. He and his wife Nancy have four children.

House Democrats Open to DNA Breakup Proposal
House Democrats say a Senate bill to split the Iowa Department of Natural Resources deserves serious consideration but hope politics do not drive the decision. Rep. Dennis Black and Rep. Paul Johnson say they are open to hearing arguments as proposals circulate to reshape the EPC and create an environmental advocate position. Branstad signoff remains uncertain, with the governor less firm on the breakup than the Senate.
