A major Northeast storm defied forecasts as New York City expected two inches of snow then rain while the system produced heavy snow elsewhere. The weather service warned of more snow affecting New England, and snow collapsed roofs in C W Post College and a Washington Boat Show tent. National Guard helped clear highways as airports closed and flights diverted. Some residents benefited with more hotel business while others blamed officials for slow snow removal.
