Iowa City The state Board of Regents refused to back the Iowa House bill to legalize Laetrile, urging the legislature not to involve the University of Iowa in setting drug manufacturing standards. President Willard Boyd said the university should not set standards, FDAs role. The board also approved a 13.1 million expansion of Carver Pavilion at University Hospitals with more patient rooms and future growth.
Linn County officials warn that the 1978-79 budget may rise by more than 300000 dollars due to the state criminal code revision. A letter to state legislators notes tax increases are restricted by a seven percent cap in some funds, while current year costs rise from changes taking effect Jan 1. The board cites implementation timing, budget needs for new programs, and requests from departments, including a 136286-dollar ask from the county attorney for additional expenses and three more assistants.
