Debate over MLK Day classes in Iowa districts grows

Iowa City and other districts face contention over holding classes on the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. Supporters say the day should focus on service and learning, while critics urge a true off day or expanded curriculum tied to King’s legacy. Schools vary from full days to professional development only, with districts like North Linn, Central City, and Anamosa weighing observed traditions against local preferences.

Path to a first class holiday honoring Martin Luther King Jr

The 1983 bill created a federal holiday on the third Monday of January in tribute to Martin Luther King Jr born January 15 1929. The first observance was 1986 and it became a paid federal holiday for all states by 2000. The 1994 law framed service day activities reflecting King’s life and teachings. A 2013 survey showed 32 percent of employers treat it as paid leave and 11 percent sponsor King Day programs.
