Iowa lawmakers approved a nearly 100 million increase in state aid for fiscal 2007, lifting K-12 funding to over 2 billion annually for the first time. Senate Republicans joined House Democrats to maintain 4 percent growth in base budgets for all 367 districts, amid IPERS shortfall concerns.
Senate Education Committee backed an 4 percent spending rise for 2006-07 with co chair Sen. Paul McKinley noting nine zero figures. The House Education Committee approved the same increase 22-1, while lawmakers consider another 100 million from the general fund and extra accountability measures for schools.
