In the United States registration is limited to five states and 240 000 eligible voters. Registration runs Jan 28 to Jan 30 ahead of the Iraq election.
President Bush's proposal for personal investment accounts could force across-the-board cuts to both retirement and disability benefits. Because benefits are calculated by the same formula, any future retirement cuts would likely reduce disability payments unless the programs are separated. The plan raises questions about how investment accounts would work for disabled individuals, especially youths or dependents, who may need benefits sooner and earn less.
The SSA notes 6.2 million disabled beneficiaries with an average monthly benefit of 866 dollars and 1.7 million dependents. About 30 percent of today’s 20 year olds may become disabled before 67. Roughly 72 percent of private sector workers lack long term disability insurance.
