Iowa endures record lows with Waterloo at 28 below, Mason City 26 below, Spencer 30 below, Cedar Rapids 18 below. Davenport notes 12 below as January cold lingers, forecasts expect only slight warming Tuesday. Water main bursts in Iowa City as crews tackle icy streets and freezing waters. continued subzero weather disrupts daily life.
Cedar Rapids recorded a prolonged subzero spell beginning Saturday evening with the thermometer sinking to 13 below. By Sunday night the high reached minus five at 1 pm and hovered between minus five and minus seven before drifting lower after 1 am. Overnight readings dropped to minus sixteen by early Monday as downtown temperatures fell to record lows.
Washta in Cherokee county led the state at 38 degrees below zero, followed by Cherokee at 35 and LeMars at 34 below. McGregor hit 30 below at the Grain terminal and 25 below downtown, with other readings from Decorah to Manchester between 19 and 26 below. Cedar Rapids Municipal airport fell to 18 below as a northwest wind of 12 mph persisted.
In Marengo the Mangold home was gutted by a third blaze in five days with firemen fighting four hours to save it. Earlier fires left the kitchen, porch and living room damaged while the house remained vacant. State fire marshals probe the sequence of incidents.
David O. McKay, president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints since 1951, died early Sunday at age 96 in Salt Lake City. Congestive heart failure and kidney problems were listed as causes. Messages of condolence poured in from church leaders and U.S. leaders, including President Nixon and former President Johnson. The Church's Council of Twelve met to arrange funeral plans and to consider a successor, with funeral likely Thursday in Salt Lake City and burial in the local cemetery.
UPI reports United Nations Secretary General Thant canceled a trip to a Biafran refugee zone after talks with Nigerian leaders. He said reconciliation was underway and noted no mistreatment of defeated tribesmen. Gowon welcomed Thant in Lagos as wartime measures eased and relief efforts faced delays in delivering aid.

Washington AP reports the Nixon administration derailed a proposed semi public corporation to modernize and operate key links of remaining railroad passenger service. The plan would create RailPax modeled on COMSAT with $100 million federal investment over three years and $40 million for rolling stock and loan guarantees.
Attorney for Lt. William Calley revealed recordings of conversations among helicopter crews at My Lai on the day he faces murder charges for 109 Vietnamese civilians. The hearing, aimed at deciding if Calley will face a court martial, included a partially open session with no disclosed statements. The proceedings also referenced a Minnesota draft case and an appeal in a separate deprivation case, with defense arguing lack of evidence and rights violations.
Washington AP reports living costs rose sharply in December and finished 1969 with a 26 1 percent yearly inflation, the most since 1951. Food and housing drove December’s 0.6 percent CPI rise, boosting the index to 131.3 on the 1957-59 base and costing typical families about 13.13 more per 10 dollars of spending. Purchasing power for about 45 million workers fell 62 cents a week, the third straight monthly drop and 11 percent below a year earlier.
