Benson faces farm aid questions before confirming USDA post

Herefords Average $325 in Shalla Sale at Kalona Barn

Fifty nine lots of purebred Herefords sold at the Dwane J. Shalla dispersal in Kalona with an average of $325. Bulls averaged $320 while females averaged $330. The top bull Helmsman WHR 19th brought $540 to R G Harding of Bloomfield and the top female sold for $580 to Sharbon and Son of Tiffin. Auctioneer was J E Halsey of Des Moines.

Alpin Named Assistant To Benson

Richard D. Alpin of Boston was named assistant to Agriculture Secretary-designate Ezra Taft Benson. Alpin serves as federal milk marketing administrator for greater Boston and three other Massachusetts communities.

Top Lamb Brings 79c Per Pound At Junior Show

The Eastern Iowa 4 H Lamb Feeders show at Hawkeye Downs crowned Arlo Becker Jr of Watkins as champion with a 110 pound lamb selling to Wilson and Company for 74 cents per pound. A second place lamb sold for 49 cents per pound to Bath Packing. Top ten placers included Bobby Pearson Dale Light Herbert Pelzer and others. Buyers included Wilson Rath Iowa Packing People’s Bank Gazette. The 48 lots averaged 23.26 per hundredweight. Wilbur Colby auctioned. Ted Becker and Tom Wickersham spoke on feeding and purposes of the feeders project. K M Timmerman discussed carcass grades.

Farm Loan Assn Pays Dividend at Manchester

Victory National Farm Loan Association of Manchester mailed checks totaling 9062 to stockholders for a 7 percent dividend. Funds came from stock dividends paid by member cooperatives to the Federal Land Bank of Omaha. Board members include R H Davey Earlville president M J Martin Volga vice president William B Goerdt Dyersville J T O Laughlin Independence and Melvin C Scott Strawberry Point. The association serves farmers in Delaware Clayton and Buchanan counties.

Delaware County Swine Producers Plan New Association

Plans were made Friday to organize the Delaware County Swine Producers Association at a Manchester swine clinic in the Legion hall. Speakers included E. L. Quaife Dr Maynard Spear from Iowa State College Bernard Ebbing Rath Packing Wilbur Plager Iowa Swine Producers Association Dean Rinner Wilson and Company Lyle Sutton Delhi and Elmer Kehrli Manchester. About 175 farmers attended the clinic.

Marion FFA Chapter Rents 28 Acre Farm

The Marion FFA chapter has rented 28 acres of the Jess Starry farm at the south edge of Marion. The land will host experimental plots of corn oats soybeans and other crops and generate income for the new chapter. The school board lent $300 to start operations to be repaid as profits grow. Brown Township Mutual To Meet For 86th Time

SPRINGVILLE The Brown Township Mutual Insurance Association will hold its 86th annual meeting next Saturday at the Springville school. An oyster dinner opens at noon followed by an entertainment program and business session. The group, organized in 1867, reports 1952 losses higher but reserves up and reduced assessments. Total insurance in force Jan 1 1953 is 10 465 475 with gains and assets noted. Officers listed include Pollock president and Thompson secretary treasurer.
