Cedar Rapids pay phones will charge 10 cents per local call starting Friday. W F Mollenhoff of Northwestern Bell says most machines will be updated by then and callers must drop a dime instead of a nickel. The rise comes as operating costs increase and follows earlier adoption in Minnesota Illinois and South Dakota.
Kenneth T. Woods, 37, of Chicago, pled innocent Thursday to a new bad check charge and is jailed in Linn County on 1000 bond. He was arrested in the Midway tavern after attempting to pay 30.52 with a 40 check on Enzler's. The earlier 60 check incident led to a six month sentence, with Woods released Sunday after two months served.
William O Claassen, receiver for the CIO Labor Center, resists a bid to cancel his appointment. Five club members seek to overturn the Dec 28 order citing alleged illegality and a family tie to attorney George Claassen. The court had not ruled on the motions. Claassen was named receiver after the center faced financial collapse from gambling device losses and internal friction.
Linn county reports lower dependent child aid costs than the state average this month while per child payments exceed state figures. County totals show 1,533 old age cases, 64 blind cases, and 158 children aid cases involving 386 children with overall costs of 75,895.50 for old age assistance, 3,890.10 for aid to the blind, and 12,259 for aid to children.
Bertha E. Larimer administratrix sues for 52000 damages after her 24 year old son from Vinton was killed in an auto accident on November 5. The wrongful death suit was filed Thursday.
President Truman said he would highly appreciate Senate approval to send more troops to Europe, while stressing he would act as needed to meet the world situation. He favored a Democratic majority resolution on use of U.S. troops, and outlined plans on Korea, Red China, and a possible tax proposal with price and wage controls to be set as machinery allows. He avoided committing to a 1952 run and commented on a Look magazine article about his candidacy.
Mrs. Larimer sues Clarence Platte and Robert J. Jacob in Cedar Rapids Iowa alleging negligence in a crash 14 miles north on Highway 150. She seeks 50000 dollars for her son's death and 2000 dollars for damage to his 1950 car. she was a passenger but uninjured.
Calvin Nading 28 waived to the grand jury on a breaking and entering charge before Justice of the Peace C L Benesh. Bond set at 3000 dollars. He and his brother Clarence 29 were accused of breaking into a Troy Mills tool shed August 20 and stealing tools. Clarence is in jail for larceny in Clayton county and will be brought to Linn county when released, said Deputy Harlan Snyder.
College township residents will vote Friday on a proposed 376000 dollar bond for a new 12 classroom elementary school. Polls open 12 noon to 9 pm at the township hall, 1.5 miles south of Hunter airport. Iowa law requires 60 percent yes for approval. The school would replace nine one room schools already in use.
John Kopecky Jr acting as administrator of his mother Katherine Kopecky’s estate files suit against his brother Edward Kopecky. The petition claims Edward as executor of their father’s will handled funds for Mrs Kopecky and refuses to provide an accounting of money received and disbursed from Feb 15 1941 to Apr 22 1946. John seeks court orders for Edward to account.
The James W. Bell Company was awarded a judgment of 552.45 on Thursday in an account suit against Darrell Daubenmeir.
The Public Health Nursing Association at its annual dinner elected four new directors and re-elected four. New directors are Miss Marian Hunting Mrs Kenneth Bogaard Mrs Frank Nye and John M Ely Jr. Re-elected are Mrs Frank D Aquila Mrs John Hecker Alvin G Keyes and E C Hoyt.
Carl J. Wintersteller 33 slowed for an intersection to assist his 6 year old son when he bent over. His car collided with another vehicle and then struck Norman Beeman 80 who was walking on the curb.
The Little Hoover Commission faulted the state for lax authority and waste, citing the State board of control, Liquor Control Commission, and Tax Commission. It urged tighter lines of authority, better oversight, and periodic checks on state cars and cafeterias, praising the Blind Commission and Woodward school while noting dire conditions at Marshalltown Soldiers Home.

Cedar Rapids recorded fire losses totaling 31,251.87 during December, with insurance covering all but 525 dollars. The report to the city council by Fire Chief E. P. Kohout details 12,746.10 in building losses and 18,505.77 in contents, with total building values at 1,477,000 and contents at 161,608.27.
DES MOINES AP two bills in the Iowa House would let the incumbent city assessor be reappointed for a new term without a re examination. Rep Ernest Kosek and Rep Fred Schwengel sponsored the measures with three additional Republicans.
About 150 men of the Minnesota national guard division rested at Hawkeye Downs Cedar Rapids on the way to Camp Rucker Alabama. The Farm Youth Center housed them as the All Iowa Fair covered most costs with heating paid by the group. The convoy of 70 vehicles parked along the grounds entrance and meals were taken at VFW Post 788 clubrooms. Cedar Rapids marked their first stop.

Acting Postmaster J W McLaughlin announced two promotions at the Cedar Rapids post office. Walter F Michalicek 1038 Sixteenth street NE becomes assistant superintendent of mails after a career since 1922. Frank J Teply 173 Sixteenth avenue SW is named carrier foreman after joining as substitute carrier May 27. Both retroactive to Tuesday.
Urbana expert Clark W. Van Scheik warns of a thriving horsemeat trade in Ohio with profits from substituting horse for beef. He notes horsemeat at 15 cents a pound can fetch 75 cents to 1.25 dollars as beef, attracting what he calls a gangster element.
Harold Ewoldt will become manager of the Traffic bureau of the Chamber of Commerce on Feb 1 after the resignation of Grant Maples. Ewoldt, assistant manager since 1948, previously worked 10 years as a rate clerk for a Cedar Rapids motor freight firm and served 3.5 years in World War II. He is married and lives at 351 Nineteenth Street NW. Burial details follow for a church service at St Patrick's with Rosary at Teahen chapel Friday evening.
Ella Dora Krouse age 76 died at her Toddville area home Wednesday after a long illness. She was born March 29 1875 in Buffalo and is survived by four daughters two sons twelve grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Funeral 1 30 p m Friday at Turner chapel with Rev E Milo Martin burial Dunkard cemetery. Friends may call after 1 p.m. Thursday.
Services for Mrs. Helen Elizabeth Carmichael aged 78 will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Barta Hesser chapel conducted by Dr. Marvin Kober. Burial will follow at Monona Cemetery with visiting hours after 4 p.m. Friday at the chapel.
Mrs Charles Hamer died Thursday morning in a Burbank California hospital. Survived by two sons Harry of Cedar Rapids and Ralph of Ankeny, two daughters Mrs Lawrence Peterson of Cedar Rapids and Mrs Walter Olsen of Hollywood, a grandchild, two sisters Mrs Emily Hoyt and Mrs George McKee of Cedar Rapids. Cedar Rapids services at a time to be announced.
Services for Harry R. Gibson of 226 Avenue NW are set at St. Patrick's Church at 9 a.m. Friday. Burial will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. The Women’s Catholic Order of Foresters Court 727 and Rt. Rev. Msgr. D J Lenihan will lead the Rosary at 7 30 p.m. Thursday at Teahen chapel with friends welcome to attend.
Miss Helen June Ryan 53 of 237 Twelfth street NW died Wednesday after moving to Cedar Rapids from Independence. Born November 2, 1897 in Masonville she was a member of St. Patrick's church. Surviving include several aunts.

Davis recovered destroyed records and a patrol survey showing midnight shift car counts and officer stops. The "Head Duke" and secretary are over 18 and may face charges. others head to juvenile court.
Seven year old Merle Hope was playing with his siblings in a Des Moines apartment when a four inch lead pencil pierced his back and touched the spine. He was hospitalized under observation after his brother Jerry, 11, pulled the pencil free. Doctors said the spine was not punctured but the injury’s seriousness remained to be assessed.
Iowa City United Press reports swimming star Wally Ris was named full time secretary of the University of Iowa I club. Ris, a 1949 graduate and former Iowa swimming great, will assume duties shortly after February 1 while employed at Wilson Packing Company in Chicago. The I club includes University of Iowa major lettermen and selected non lettermen and women.
