Solon man turns rocks into gem art hobby

Dean Keith, retired in 1969 after 27 years at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Iowa City, has taken up lapidary as a winter hobby. He crafts polished stones from rough rocks, mounts them in jewelry, buckles and inlays, and displays them in five cases at home. Keith, active in the Solon Legion post, buys rocks from mail order houses and shows, carves with a diamond blade saw, then polishes on carborundum and buffing wheels. He treasures Iowa agates and other colorful gems, trading for mounts and creating pieces for family and shows.
