Privacy right of families stressed at Kirkwood conference
Hanna Weston of Kirkwood Community College urged strong protection for family privacy amid state intervention. The day-long conference on The State and the Family centered on juvenile delinquency, the status offender, and the Juvenile Justice bill with lawmakers and professionals in attendance. Weston cited Alsager vs District Court of Polk County where officials seized children, noting the state’s interest is not absolute and must balance with parental rights.

Davidson crowns Cedar Rapids Symphony with strong pop set
Baritone John Davidson delivered a standout performance for the Cedar Rapids Symphony after guest trumpet Er Doc Severinsen canceled. The Saturday show drew a full house with a fast moving set of 50s hits and solid ensemble support from a four saxophonist section, Tom Kelly on piano, and Joe Harris on drums. The orchestra impressed with fluently-cut arrangements despite key and meter changes.
