Colombo Ceylon AP The United States was elected to full membership in the Colombo Plan at its annual council session. Since 1951 the U S had attended as an observer. The plan, formed in 1950 by advanced Commonwealth nations, aids more than 650 million people in South and Southeast Asia.
A bus plunged 2,400 feet down a cliff near Huancayo Peru killing fifteen people and wounding eighteen others on a Wednesday night accident.

Frances Trecek 79 widow of Joseph Trecek of 2509 Mr. Vernon road SE died Thursday after a long illness. Born in Czechoslovakia April 13, 1879 she came to the United States in 1911. Surviving are seven sons Joseph of Boscobel Jerry and Aldrich of Rockford John Racine Louis Muscatine Frank Montfort and Edward Cedar Rapids. two daughters Beatrice and Helen both Cedar Rapids. one sister in Wauzeka and one brother in Czechoslovakia. She was a member of the Czech Evangelical and Reformed church. Services Janeba's 2 Saturday by Rev Milo Filipi. Body to be taken for further services at 2 Sunday at the Blue River Valley church. Burial Blue River cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home.
Services for Dr. R. A. Vorpahl will be conducted at 1:30 Saturday by Rector D. A. Loferski. Burial in Union Cemetery in Milwaukee at 11 a.m. Monday. Friends may call at Beatty-Bearle's until 11 a.m. Saturday and at the church from 12:30 to 1:15. The family asks donations to St John’s church memorial fund if desired.
Services for Peter F. Hansen will be conducted at Turner's at 1 30 Saturday by the first reader of the First Church of Christ Scientists. Burial will follow at Cedar Memorial with friends invited to call at the chapel.

Born Alice Donelan in 1864 she joined the convent in 1885 and taught in Iowa parochial schools Mt. Mercy and more. Services set for Mt. Mercy college chapel with a Solemn Requiem High Mass.
U.S. federal commissioner ruled there was no reasonable cause to believe Andrija Artukovic guilty of mass murder charges in Yugoslavia. The 58 year old former wartime Croatian interior minister lived near Long Beach California with his wife and five children, after prior deportation orders.
A Cedar Rapids Gazette carrier boy wins Parade magazine and The Gazette sponsored Young Columbus III Easter in Italy contest. He flies to New York March 26, jets to Rome for Easter, tours Vatican City and famed sites, returns April 5, judged on route excellence school citizenship. Other contestants receive cash or merchandise awards.
CAIRO AP Britain and Egypt reached a final agreement on a settlement of financial claims from the 1956 Suez war. The accord will be signed in a few days once the complete text is sent to London and details will be announced after signing.
Pianist Van Cliburn criticized the National Junior Chamber of Commerce after they revoked his award for not attending the ceremony. They named singer Pat Boone instead, claiming ulterior motives. Cliburn said the award is invalid if it hinges on personal presence and insisted his accomplishments stand alone.
A Yale calendar printed by a student agency shows February 1959 with 31 days. Yale officials say printers made the mistake and that March starts on time and the error does not affect the rest of the year.
Detective Harold Cerveny, a 12 year veteran of the Cedar Rapids police force, resigned Thursday. He has been in the juvenile bureau in recent years and plans to move to California in late spring.
A Cedar Rapids meeting discussed issuing women monthly checks of 15.40 for 60 pairs of shorts with the payments going to a finance company. Warranties were deemed invalid due to commercial use, and no further payments will be made until a decision is reached. Delegates from Tama and others attended, as sewing circle frustration and zig zag mending hopes persisted.
Thirty two semi finalists for three Iowa-Illinois Gas and Electric Co. college scholarships were announced by R Hovey Tinsman. They were selected from about six hundred applicants based on Oct 21 National Scholarship Qualifying Test scores. Cedar Rapids area entrants include Alan Messner Ned William Strain John Krob Castle and Gerald Ray Woods among others from Illinois Davenport Iowa City and Fort Dodge districts.
Courthouse records show a district court filing for $10,900 in damages by three plaintiffs from a two car wreck on Mt Vernon road east of Cedar Rapids November 22. James E. Moore, Cornell student, seeks $750 for injuries and $650 for car damages. passenger Lelynn Beatty requests $7,500 for injuries. Grover Beatty seeks $2,000 for medical expenses. Lynn Thiher and Mary Ann Thiher named codefendants.
Iowa City 25 year old Mrs Henry Hugert pled guilty to passing a 351 dollar worthless check on November 21 at a Cedar Rapids clothing store. A suspended 60 day jail term was imposed in Linn County District Court and restitution has been made.
New Delhi notes India and Yugoslavia will continue to coexist with all East-West blocs and join none as Prime Ministers Nehru and Tito meet. The leaders reaffirmed non-alignment and mutual respect in international affairs.
LITTLE ROCK January 16. A state legislative committee charged that Arkansas racial unrest was deliberately engineered by the Communist party. The education committee also accused the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People of being a captive of the Communist apparatus.
In Havana Castro says Cuba seeks good relations with the United States but rejects submission to U S criticism of executions. He warns against U S intervention and says war criminals will be executed within the law despite pressure.
Congressional leaders Morse D Ore Sparkman urged prompt naming of a successor to Earl E. T. Smith. After talks with Roy Rubottom, Rep. Hays said the State Department did not go as far as he desired and proposed a formal protest to Cuba over executions. He would seek economic pressure if needed including a trade embargo and travel ban.
Paris AP reports the new French national assembly gave Premier Debre's political program an overwhelming vote of approval on Friday.
