Ten Cedar Rapids ice skaters earn berths to represent the city in the Chicago Silver Skates tournament. Selected athletes include Bob Ramsdell Eddie Minder Sandra Vavra Renee Wagner Judy Snyder Bruce Carr Ann Cooper Betty Shobes and Bob Engler with others possible. Franklin tops Wilson 60-51 in a City conference clash at Coe Fieldhouse. Peterson scored four late free throws to seal the comeback as Kokesh and Davis fueled a final minute burst. Wilson led early behind Sargeant and Hamilton but Franklin, led by Woods Bailey Thenhaus and Kokesh, pulled away after halftime.
Cedar Rapids baseball manager 1953 Al Kubski will be honored at the mid winter banquet on Tuesday night January 27 at the Roosevelt hotel. Tickets go on sale Saturday at Becks Armstrongs and the club offices. Prices remain the same as 1952 with options for season tickets and group sales. The event includes speeches by Kubski and others and a nickname contest with a midnight January 21 deadline.
Sharon EUB and St James Calvary posted victories Thursday in Church league basketball at Wilson High School. Calvary defeated a rival while St James edged a close contest as Sharon EUB dominated in Friday play at the same venue.
